Www.ABC.com/Glasshouse – Vote – Tell Them What To Do
Take over the Glass House and tell them what to do live. It’s your opportunity to express what you want to see in the abc.com/glasshouse polls. For example, you can influence what happens in the house. From the type of food they eat, to the type of things they wear for parties, the viewers of Glass House who vote are in control of the show. If you missed the show, you can even watch full episodes of it online according to their website. The show’s official page even enables you to watch some live streaming. Watching people live in a glass house is so addictive, as you want to view what is happening 24 hours a day, seven days a week. More importantly, I think the old adage comes into play with reference to glass houses. Simply put, I think we will see a day of reckoning for those who do throw stones in that very glass house. The actions of Alex were very compelling. It was like he immediately got the concept and understood that he was truly a pawn of the viewers. However, what he also enjoys is the ability to dictate the questions he asks the voters. So is he really a pawn if he decides the actions that voters vote on? That is truly a philosophical question and it will be interesting to see how it plays out.
If you haven’t participated in the voting, you should take advantage of that because it allows you to be more involved in the show. More importantly, it is easy to vote and give your input on the www.abc.com/glasshouse site. Knowing that your vote dictates the potential action makes for fun interactive TV. My question now is whether or not this is a reality television show. Simply put, if we are telling the players in the Glass House what to do and potentially when to do it, is that reality? A better question might be, whose reality is it? Also, one might ask if there is such thing as a collective reality. I view ABC’s Glass House not only as great television that I enjoy, but I also see it as a great psychological experiment.
At first I thought the show Glass House was going to be a knock off of Big Brother. However, that is far from the case. In fact, I find Glass House much more compelling and fun. I was constantly going to the ABC.com glass house website to read up on the players and see how I could influence the polls. In fact, I got my friends involved over twitter and facebook. We were collectively trying to decide how we might vote as a block to sway an outcome. For example, we all decided we want to keep Alex. We all like him because he gets the concept that we the audience are there to control the episodes. It is almost like we are directors and they are actors taking directions. If Alex frequently changes his questions regarding his behavior to the audience , it will make for a fun and dynamic show. In addition, will the other players catch on to what he is doing and will they do it to. To me that would be the ultimate social scientific experiment: will the people on a reality show totally acquiesce to the commands of an unknown audience and act out their requests faithfully? However, will the commands go and will they still act upon them?
Glass house is truly an innovative concept because the audience is writing and directing the show in realtime. If you haven’t already gotten involved, you should do so on the www.abc.com/glasshouse page. I truly feel that people will be talking about this show for years to come in many regards. One, they will talk about this show in terms of its revolutionary concept. However, more importantly, they will be talking about how this show has forever brought English philosopher Jeremy Bentham’s panopticon into public discourse. The initial season of Glasshouse will influence the way future shows progress. Simply put, it will inform future players on the show how to play and win.
