FeedingAmerica.org/hunger – Find A Food Bank – Fight Hunger

Did you know that one out of every six americans is facing hunger.  Feeding America is tackling this issue with their resources on www.feedingamerica.org/hunger.  There is even a video public service announcement featuring Matt Damon that addresses hunger.  More importantly there is a place to find a food bank near you. In this difficult recession we are experiencing, many people are having a hard time making ends meet.  In fact, times are so rough that people don’t have enough to eat.  Many people are going hungry every night.  You can help end hunger by donating to Feeding America.  In addition to these resources, there are also startling statistics that truly illustrate why this is such an epidemic.  According to Feeding America, there are over 48 million Americans who live with very low food security.  That can not only impact adults, but it can also dramatically impact children.  Many children go to bed hungry at night too. According to statistics, Mississippi and Texas are two states atop the list of states with high food insecurity issues.  Hunger also impacts a lot of diverse groups of people. Hunger is not just in suburbia or rural areas.  Hunger impacts working people and seniors too.

There are a number of programs to help those who need food.  For example, there are community food banks and there are even programs available through public assistance to help.  However, the problem is widespread and this problem must be defeated.  It can have dramatic lasting impact.  To learn how to combat this or donate, visit the feedingamerica.org/hunger site. There is even a place where you can sign up with your email address to be apprised of new, timely information regarding hunger problems and, more importantly, solutions.   If you haven’t gotten involved in ending hunger in America, I would encourage you to do so.

FeedingAmerica.org hunger campaign is really doing a lot of good in communities.  No one in a country like America should ever go to bed hungry.  You can volunteer or you can even advocate.  I volunteer to feed the hungry in my community.  I find that is truly rewarding to do this no only on Thanksgiving, but on other days.  After all, people aren’t just hungry on holidays.  If you don’t have time to serve, I would suggest that you make donations to food banks where private donations are accepted.  You may never see the person who receives the food, but you will feel good knowing that someone is getting a meal who might not have had one.

If you know someone who is starving or if you are hungry, I would encourage you to find available food banks in your community  on the feedingamerica.org/hunger page. You should also explore the federal program that was formerly called Food Stamps.  Known by the name SNAP which stands for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, you might be eligible.  The information on how to access SNAP benefits can be found in both English and Spanish. There is also a program to provide meals for children.  This is so important in schools, as children who are hungry can’t learn. Read the detailed PDFs to see if you meet the eligibility requirements. They even have a hunger hotline listed as a resource.  I remember growing up with parents who talked about going to bed hungry at night.  I never really thought they were serious as a kid.  I thought that they didn’t get dessert.  However, when I matured, I learned that they weren’t joking and many children really do go to bed hungry.  Get involved and make a difference.

Feeding America not only provides you a means by which to help, they also provide a list of food banks.  If you are hungry, I would implore you to take advantage of all the food resources available to you.  We all have our pride, but we must understand that from time to time we do need a helping hand.  Utilize these resources to your benefit and one day you will be able to return the favor.  If Matt Damon can get involved, then so can you.  Doing just a little, like donating food, is a way to show compassion and a way to help your fellow man.  Who knows, you might even need a food bank yourself one day and you will appreciate the contributions you made prior even more.  To find the correct address, you will want to use the org extension.  FeedingAmerica.com/hunger does not appear to take you to the same destination.  Get involved and help a child get plenty of nutritious food. Volunteer to make a difference in your city today.
