As a child, I had a knee deformity that made me walk with a limp and was very painful. My parents did not want me to have it cut on until I made that decision for myself at age 18. As a result, mobility was very difficult and I found it difficult to play with the other kids. However, Ms. Josephine made me feel special when she was providing day care.
When it came time to take a recess, she would always say to me after the other kids ran outside. Aren’t you the lucky one. You get to play a game with me. All the kids are always to busy to rush outside to know that if they stayed they’d get to play games inside. I guess that is there loss and our secret. Everytime the others would run out, she would play a game with me. Mainly we played checkers and chess. In fact, I cherished learning chess at such a young age. I always remember when the other kids came back in and asked what we were doing, she would just smile. Then, she would say that I was helping her with work. Of course, after she said that, she would always wink at me. Her child care was the best cause she took an interest in me and my condition. I felt treasured because I felt like I got special attention. I really didn’t think at the time she was doing that because of my situation. I honestly thought she just wanted to have someone play a game with. It wasn’t until a few years later that I understood it was all for me. That is quality child care and if her childcare facility was rated by Youngstar in Wisconsin it would receive 5 stars in my book. After seeing those types of ratings and my personal experience, everyone in Wisconsin would want their child to be in a young star child care facility like that one. Even later, I would realize how much she sacrificed. Simply put, I would later realize that she gave up her only break in the day to spend with me. I wish I would have had a chance to tell her how much she meant to me, but she passed before I truly realized all the sacrifices she made to provide the best childcare around.
I’m sure there are other facilities out there that have Ms. Josephine types working in them, but the secret is finding them.
